元々1958年にフォークウェイズ・レコーズからリリースされた本作は、北米のカエルの鳴き声を集めたフィールド・レコーディングの名作。1998年にCD化された際、大型CDショップのニューエイジ売り場にて大きく展開された作品です。人気の秘密はそのボリューム。カエルの鳴き声を集めたCDは他にも幾つかあっても、57種類の鳴き声を集めたという本作のヴァラエティに勝るものはありません。同系統の多くのCDが1トラック60分であったり、数分のトラックを10数個集めたものだったりする中、本作は怒濤の92トラック。殆どのトラックが1分以下で、各種の鳴き声の違いを存分に楽しめるようになっています。勿論、サンプリングやSE等の使い勝手も良い訳です。
本作はアメリカ自然史博物館の生物学者チャールズ・M・ボガートによって録音されました。40頁以上に及ぶ解説、またナレーションも彼が担当しています。当然、生物学的資料として貴重なものであり、知的欲求も満たしてくれますが、なによりアピールしたいのは収録されたカエルの鳴き声自体の、多様で不思議なサウンド。日本に住む私たちにも馴染み深い声から、小鳥か子犬かというような可愛らしい声、特撮映画の怪獣の鳴き声のようなもの、更にはエフェクトをかけたエレキ・ギターのノイズにしか聴こえないようなものまで、本当に様々な鳴き声が収録されています。近年急速な個体数の減少が危惧されている両生類だけに、中にはもう聴くことの出来ない、失われた声もあるかもしれません。
カエル好きの方(?)には勿論マスト・アイテムですが、あらゆる「未知の音」を求める音楽ファンにこそ聴いて驚いてほしい作品です。(サプライヤーインフォより)
